An incandescent lamp, these generally consist of a tungsten filament which is sealed into a compact transparent envelope filled with a small amount of halogen and an inert gas. The lifetime of the bulb is enhanced through the halogen cycle which also avoids the bulb’s darkening by redepositing tungsten from the inside back onto the filament. In comparison to a standard gas filled model, the these can operate their filament at a higher temperature without losing its operating life. This results in higher efficacy (10-30 lm/W) along with light of higher color temperature than provided by a non-halogen incandescent lamp. On the other hand, they may be designed to have twice the life with the same or higher efficacy.
Halogen bulbs produce a bright, natural and warm light that makes colors far clearer and brighter than incandescent or conventional fluorescent lighting. There are various types, and with the wide selection you are sure to find one that suits your needs perfectly!
While using halogen replacement bulbs, you must take certain precautions!
Look out for any sort of surface contamination like fingerprints that can damage the quartz envelope when it is heated. A hot spot is created on the bulb surface by contaminants when it is turned on. As a result, the excessive heat leads to change of the quartz from its vitreous form into a weaker, crystalline form which leaks gas.
Due to this weakening, the bulb may form a bubble and subsequently explode or fail to work. In short, this can be a serious safety hazard. Manufacturers recommend careful handling of these without touching the clear quartz. You can use a clean paper towel or hold the porcelain base carefully. In case of any contamination, the quartz must be cleaned with rubbing alcohol and dried before using it.
One of the major benefits of using these in homes is the energy saving potential of these items. As compared to the power consumption of traditional bulbs (40W-100W), these consume about 20W-50W of power only. However, they can light up rooms brighter and for longer time!
